广东省的爱好者于2012年发现于阳江的奇怪小型短虾虎。此前并没有在南海北岸有过短虾虎鱼的记录，并与其它分布区域的短虾虎鱼地理位置相去甚远，为一个相对独立的种群。形态上，鳍条、鳞片的可数性状统计以及斑纹形态证明此鱼与马来半岛、新加坡和和婆罗洲的婆罗洲短虾虎鱼（Brachygobius kabiliensis）较为接近。但鉴于网上没有足够可信的婆罗洲短虾虎鱼序列，加上短虾虎鱼斑纹变异较大，我们暂时难以确定二者之间的关系。

In 2012, enthusiasts in Guangdong Province discovered a strange small Brachygobius species in Yangjiang. Prior to this, there had been no records of Brachygobius along the northern coast of the South China Sea, and this population is geographically isolated from other Brachygobius populations, forming a relatively independent one. Morphologically, fin ray counts, scale counts, and body band pattern suggest that this fish is closely related to Brachygobius kabiliensis from the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, and Borneo. However, due to the lack of reliable Brachygobius kabiliensis sequences online and the significant variation in the species' body band patterns, we are currently unable to definitively determine the relationship between the two.

This species inhabits the brackish water regions on the western coast of Guangdong.
