本种长期以来在中国被鉴定为大颌裸身虾虎鱼（Gymnogobius macrognathos），如《中国动物志》等著作中均有记载。然而，查阅大颌裸身虾虎鱼的模式产地记录及《日本鱼类检索》中的相关资料后发现，这些记录均将大颌裸身虾虎鱼指向分布于黄渤海及日本沿岸的另一物种（目前中国的本物种尚无清晰图像，但网络上流传有来自河北秦皇岛的采集记录）。由于大颌裸身虾虎鱼的原始文献及模式标本暂不可得，现阶段以模式产地的记录为准。形态学依据显示，日本和朝鲜半岛的鱼类学记录中均将本词条这种鱼归为日本裸身虾虎鱼。我们正积极获取更多标本，期望通过分子生物学手段加以验证。

值得一提的是，虽然中国的志书少有提到本鱼，但《日本鱼类检索》已记录其在中国河北、辽宁及浙江的分布。浙江的分布点虽与其它区域不连续，但网站维护者在2015年至2018年间，在浙江朱家尖岛、临海的通海溪流及温岭的滩涂淡水注入区采集到形态与其相似的个体。由于仅保存有图片，是否确为日本裸身虾虎鱼尚需进一步验证。

This species has long been identified as Gymnogobius macrognathos in China, as documented in works like the Fauna Sinica. However, after reviewing records from the type locality of G. macrognathos and consulting The Fishes of Japan with Pictorial Keys to the Species, 3rd Edition by Nakabo et al., it appears that these records point to a different species distributed along the coasts of the Yellow Sea, Bohai Sea, and Japan. While no clear images in China are currently available, there are collection photo records on the internet, notably from Qinhuangdao, Hebei. Since the original literature and type specimens of G. macrognathos are temporarily unavailable, we rely on records from the type locality for now. Morphological evidence suggests that in ichthyological records from Japan and the Korean Peninsula, this fish is consistently identified as Gymnogobius petschiliensis. We are currently collecting additional specimens to verify this through molecular analysis.

It is worth noting that although this fish is seldom mentioned in Chinese references, The Fishes of Japan records its presence in Hebei, Liaoning, and Zhejiang provinces in China. While the distribution in Zhejiang is discontinuous from other known ranges, the website curator of this site collected morphologically similar specimens between 2015 and 2018 in rivers flowing into the sea of the Zhujiajian Island, Zhoushan Archipelago, Zhejiang and Linhai City, Zhejiang, and the estuarine mudflats of Wenling, Zhejiang. However, only photographic records are kept, and further verification is required to confirm if these specimens truly belong to Gymnogobius petschiliensis.
